The proton pump inhibitor omeprazole is available for over-the-counter (OTC) use to treat frequent heartburn. Although it is generally considered safe, 1% to 5% of patients experience side effects such as headache, diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain or rash. Taken for weeks, proton pump inhibitors are more effective than H^sub 2^-blockers for treatment of peptic ulcer or gastroesophageal reflux disease, but it can take days for them to relieve symptoms while H^sub 2^-blockers work within an hour. The OTC labeling warns against use for more than 14 days. Its cost will probably be double that of OTC H^sub 2^-blockers.
The anti-heartburn drug Prilosec (omeprazole), one of the world’s best-selling medications, has been approved for sale without a prescription by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
The proton pump inhibitor, which works to limit production of stomach acid, is newly approved to treat frequent heartburn, occurring two or more days a week. The condition affects some 50 million Americans, according to Prilosec OTC’s manufacturer, Procter & Gamble (P&G).
